Bergskaap was built by two athletes who know what it costs to stand on a start line at 3am and mean it.

Gabriel Kriel is one of South Africa's most decorated 100-mile specialists. Two wins at Addo 100, podiums at UTCT, George MUT and constant top 10 Otter finisher. The results speak for themselves. An all-rounder with grit to match his speed, Gabriel works with trail athletes at every level and has a particular gift for helping them unlock performance they did not know they had. Gabriel is a UESCA certified ultrarunning coach who loves working with data and getting the best out of his athletes.

Grobler Basson is an experienced big mountain ultra runner with numerous wins and course records, including Mac Mac, SkyRun, Maxi Winelands, Addo, Pass2Pass and Puffer. He specialises in big mountain ultra distance racing, preferring anything from 50 miles upward, and has completed expeditions across the globe. As a UESCA certified ultrarunning coach he brings that same precision and depth of mountain experience to every athlete he works with.

Herman de la Guerre is the youngest member of the Bergskaap team. At 28 he is still an active runner, learning the coaching craft under Grobler and Gabriel. Wins and podiums on the local trail circuit, a 13 Peaks completion and a self-created Tsitsikamma route give him a solid foundation to build from. He is early in his journey and he knows it. He shows up, puts in the work and is growing fast.

In 2022 Grobler and Gabriel set the first ever Namib Desert Crossing FKT together. Some ideas are too big not to try.
